Christian Symbolism in Fine Art
(elective)

Christian Symbolism in Fine Art is an exploration of art history, viewed through some of the best known works of religious art. Beginning with an introduction to symbolism and building to an understanding of Christian symbols used in art, this course investigates such artistic marvels as the Catacombs of Rome, English Illumination, Gothic Art and the Renaissance.

Artists as diverse as Bosch, DaVinci, El Greco, Michelangelo and Van Gogh (to name a few of those covered) are surveyed, with in depth analysis of the Christian symbolism found in such works as Giotto's "The Kiss of Judas" and Michelangelo's "Sistine Chapel" to Rembrandt's "Adoration of the Shepherds."
